Kenneth Wapnick, Ph.D.

This workshop expands on passages in the Course where Jesus uses the metaphor of toys to talk about the idols of specialness—both our special hate and our special love objects. These include all the relationships that we deem so important and so serious. Indeed Jesus relegates everything in our world to the category of toys, and we simply children playing with them, forgetting we have assigned them their roles in the games we play.

Little child, the light is there. You do but dream, and idols are the toys you dream you play with. Who has need of toys but children? They pretend they rule the world, and give their toys the power to move about, and talk and think and feel and speak for them…. And their [the toy’s] reality becomes his [the child’s] own, because they seem to save him from his thoughts.
